Originally from Egypt, Nicolas Abdallah Moufarrege (1947-1985) was a multimedia artist whose work effortlessly combines Eastern and Western iconography. After graduating from the American University of Beirut in 1968, Moufarrege spent over a decade participating in a Harvard University assistantship and later moved to New York City in 1981. He quickly became a prominent figure in the East Village arts scene where he wrote for several arts magazines like Artforum and New York Native as an early supporter of Post-War giants like Jean-Michel Basquiat and David Wojnarowicz.

Moufarrege’s own work reflects his multitude of lived experiences like war, migration, and queerness through his meticulous use of woven materials and various pigments. In 1985, his career was tragically cut short when he died from AIDS-related complications at age 37, leaving behind a unique visual language of cross-cultural affinity.
