Lot Essay
‘Working clay with a constant desire for renewal - with the material itself guiding the pressure of hands and fingers, opening vistas of a new world - Picasso brought together all that he had learned from a lifetime’s work in painting, drawing and sculpture and applied it to the service of his one enduring obsession: to advance his own creativity in order to share his knowledge with us. The sheer range of techniques and materials used or reinvented by Picasso makes his pottery into an art complete in itself’ Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, ‘Pottery: The desire for renewal’ in exhibition catalogue, Picasso Painter and Sculptor in Clay, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1998, p. 23.
