Lot Essay
Conceived in 1953, Femme du barbu is a sophisticated example of Picasso’s masterful skill in utilising the standard shape of the pitcher to explore the femme motif; a popular subject for the artist. This work employs mark-making to the surface creating large eyebrows and simple brushstrokes to create the eyes, nose and mouth. The piece epitomises Picasso’s playful and highly inventive approach to ceramics which lead to him being regarded in some circles not only as the greatest artist of the 20th century, but the most inventive ceramicist of the time.

A fine firing crack to the lower handle join. Minor pitting and crazing to the glaze in places, from the time of firing. Minor surface dirt in places. The unglazed areas with mild fading to the engobe in places. Evidence of cosmetic restoration in several places to the base and footrim. The footrim with three small chips and some tiny nicks to the glaze. The underside with three felt pads, and remnants of old adhesive. Subject to the foregoing it is our opinion that the present work appears to be in generally good condition.
