Claude Picasso has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

'I stand for life against death; I stand for peace against war' (Picasso, quoted in J. Richardson, Picasso Mosqueteros, New York, 2009, p. 246)

On the occasion of the 13th Congress of the French Communist Party, Pablo Picasso executed thirteen plates employing as motif the Dove of Peace. The members and deputies were each gifted a unique ceramic plate by Picasso on that occasion. Numbered amongst them was Louis Aragon (1987-1982), the previous owner of the present work.

Aragon was a major figure in the avant-garde movements that shaped French politics, literary and visual culture in the 20th century. Indeed, the inscription on this plate is from Aragon's poem Les yeux et la mémoire, published in 1954, the same year this plate was executed, and reads: 'Je reclame le droit de faire comme si La guerre était un chien assis aux pieds parfaits de notre France'.
