Lot Essay

The shape of the Arène vase is unique in Picasso's ceramic editions. The height of the vase has enabled Picasso to create the tiered arena, with the crowds looking onto the bullfight below. As the vase turns, it is as if the crowds and the central figure of the picador at the bottom of the vase become animated. The rustic, unglazed finish of the vase is also evocative of the hot, dusty and sandy atmosphere of the arena.
