Sale 1751
Picasso Ceramics
Online 15 - 29 October 2013

The knight on horseback was a recurring character in Picasso’s drawings of the early 1950s. He makes his appearance in three dimension in this playful pitcher. A series of lines made through wax resist and incising into the wet slip form the crisscross pattern of the decorative armour. The right side of the vessel is filled by the body of the horse and rotating to the left we find beside them a bright green tree and the handle forms the blue sky above them. Picasso’s inclination towards the man on horseback continued in the bull ring where he is said to have had a fondness for the picador over the more celebrated matador another character who appears throughout the ceramic works (see 40, 51, 61, 81, 84, 85, 88).
