Lot Essay
Almost all the owls represented in this sale come in the form of shaped vases. They're clever, they’re humorous—embodying both the owl and the vase forms at the same time. These are quite complex shapes, constructed out of four parts: the body, the head, the tail, and the foot. Picasso collaborated closely with Suzanne Ramié, who worked at the Madoura pottery studio with him, to design these shapes, which were quite a technical achievement—both in physical and decorative terms—employing multiple techniques to produce layered textures.

Condition report

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
No chips or restorations detected. The breast of the owl with two very short fine cracks, from the time of firing. Some crazing to the glaze in places, from the time of firing. Subject to the foregoing, it is our opinion that the work appears to be in generally very good condition.
