Lot Essay

Lampe femme is a strong example of Picasso’s ability to take the relatively standard shapes of the ceramics produced in Vallauris and personify them into animated works of art. In this example, the handles of the vase curve around the front of the body to create the female face. Striking eyes have been painted at the top of the handles with a strident nose cutting down the centre towards the lips at the bottom of the handles. The work perfectly depicts Picasso’s simple yet extremely effective approach.
