Lot Essay

Claude Picasso has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Picasso had a lifelong engagement with bullfighting and was taken to the Málaga bullring from an early age; in later life he often attended bullfights in the South of France. Bullfighting was a theme Picasso returned to frequently, particularly in the mid 1950s, and his works often explored the subject of the matador, picador, minotaur, bulls and horses.

The present unique work was executed by Picasso in 1957 as payment for a bullfight to the bullfighter Justo Armentero, to whom this ceramic is dedicated to. Unsurprisingly Justo Armentero had expected money in payment. He gave the gift to his Aunt.
