Lot Essay

In keeping with its partner piece, lot 41 Visage au nez noir, the present lot Visage aux yeux rieurs is a masterwork of glazing with the colors brightly articulating the subject and bringing it to life. The fine craftsmanship of the rounded body is noticeable in this edition, with the fine spout and handle reminiscent of an Etruscan pitcher. The all-over design remains in keeping with this classical reference but brings a Modern twist to this history. The final effect is both reverent and revolutionary at the same time, in typical Picassian fashion.
