As one of his first assignments, Terry photographed a new, upcoming pop group called The Beatles at Abbey Road recording studios. Coinciding with the release of Please Please Me, this shot appeared on the front of British Newspaper The Sketch. Capturing the mood of an era and as a marker of their popularity, the newspaper quickly sold out.

Additional Charge Details

Additional charges, including the buyer’s premium, valued added, sales or compensating use tax or equivalent tax, any applicable artist’s resale royalty, any and all shipping expenses, including costs, packing and handling, any loss damage liability fees, and all other applicable charges will apply.

Buyer’s Premium: In addition to the final bid price for each lot, you agree to pay Christie’s the buyer’s premium, plus any applicable value added, sales or compensating use tax or equivalent tax, any applicable artist’s resale royalty, any and all shipping expenses, including costs, packing and handling, any loss damage liability fees, and all other applicable charges. The buyer's premium is 25% of the first £50,000 of the hammer price on each lot plus 20% of the excess of the hammer price above £50,000 up to and including £1,000,000 plus 12% in excess of any amount above £1,000,000. VAT will be charged on the buyer’s premium at the applicable rate.

VAT: All lots shall be sold as part of the Margin Scheme unless stated with the Dagger symbol (†) or the words “Dagger Lot”, the Omega symbol (Ω) or the words “Omega Lot”, or with the Star symbol (*) or the words “Starred Lot.” Margin Scheme lots have VAT applicable to the buyer’s premium at the VAT rate of 20%. For lots marked with the Dagger symbol (†) or with the words “Dagger Lot”, VAT is payable at 20% on the final bid price and 20% on the buyer’s premium. Lots marked with the Omega symbol (Ω) or with the words “Omega Lot” are on Temporary Admission to the EU and VAT is payable at 20% on the final bid price and 20% on the buyer’s premium. Lots marked with the Star symbol (*) or with the words “Starred Lot” are on Temporary Admission to the EU and VAT is payable at 5% on the final bid price and 20% on the buyer’s premium. You are responsible for any VAT (including any Import VAT) payable as a result of the sale of the lot. VAT charges and refunds depend on the particular circumstances of the buyer. In all circumstances EU and UK law takes precedence. For the purposes of this online-only auction, the VAT amount in the buyer’s premium for EU private buyers cannot be refunded. For buyers outside the EU, VAT may be refunded if certain conditions are met including showing proof of a ‘controlled’ export outside the EU within 30 days of shipment (for lots marked with the Star symbol (*) or the words “Starred Lot”, or with the Omega symbol (Ω) or the words “Omega Lot”, on Temporary Admission) and for all other lots proof of export within 3 months of shipping. For buyers outside the EU where items are shipped outside the EU through Christie’s Art Transport, you will not be required to pay the VAT at settlement. Artist’s Resale Royalty (λ): In certain countries, local laws entitle the artist or the artist’s estate to a royalty known as ‘artist’s resale right’ when any lot created by the artist is sold. These lots are marked with the symbol λ in the lot description (or are identified in the lot description with language indicated as such. If these laws apply to a lot, you must pay us an extra amount equal to the royalty. We will pay the royalty to the appropriate authority on the seller’s behalf. The artist’s royalty applies if the sale price of the lot is more than 1,000 euro and the total charge for any lot cannot be more than 12,500 euro. We work out the amount owed as follows:

Royalty as a % of the portion of the sale price (in euro)
4% up to 50,000
3% between 50,000.01 and 200,000
1% between 200,000.01 and 350,000
0.50% between 350,000.01 and 500,000
over 500,000, the lower of 0.25% and 12,500 euro

We will work out the artist’s resale royalty using the euro to sterling rate of exchange of the European Central Bank on the day of the auction.

Payment Information

Payment: You must pay the full amount due (comprising the final bid price, buyer’s premium and any applicable taxes, artist’s resale royalty, shipping and insurance fees) no later than 11:59 p.m. (GMT) on Sunday, 8 December 2013. This applies even if you wish to export the lot and an export license is, or may be, required. You will not acquire title and own the lot until all amounts due to Christie’s have been received by us in full and cleared funds even in circumstances where Christie’s has released the lot to you.

You may pay for any lot bought in Christie’s online-only auction by means of an online payment only. Upon the closing of the online-only auction you will be notified about how to access the online page for payment. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex and China Union Payment (if the card shows the Visa or Mastercard logo). We only accept payment from the registered bidder – individual or entity.

Partial payment of a lot, or payment across multiple credit cards for a single lot, will not be allowed. If you purchase multiple lots, you may purchase one lot with one credit or debit card and another lot with a different credit or debit card, but you will need to go through separate check-outs. Storage and Collection of Purchased Lots: Subject to paragraph 6(i) in the Conditions of Sale, unless otherwise directed by you, Christie’s will store your lot, free of charge until Sunday, 8 December 2013. You must pay for your item before it will be sent to you.

Shipping: In addition to the final bid price, buyer’s premium and any applicable VAT, you will be asked to pay the applicable shipping and insurance charge in order for Christie’s Art Transport to arrange the transport and insurance of your purchased item from London to your selected shipping address. Lots purchased in the Pop Culture online only auction are not available for collection from Christie’s salerooms or offices, unless marked as an ‘Oversize Lot’ on the Lot Details page. For all other lots, Christie’s will arrange for shipment once the lots are paid for in full, cleared funds. If you wish to have your purchases shipped either domestically or internationally, you must indicate that at the time of check-out. If such shipments can be facilitated, purchases will be shipped to the address you provide at check-out. Purchases cannot be delivered to P.O. boxes. Shipments will be processed within 3-5 days of payment. Oversize lots will require crating prior to shipment and be subject to extended processing times.

We regret that for this online sale, we are unable to deliver lots to addresses in Russia and Mainland China. Please provide an alternate shipping address when registering for the sale. You take full responsibility that we are permitted to ship your purchase to the country you have requested. If we are not permitted to do so, we will not be required to cancel the sale and you will be responsible for alternative arrangements.

Provided that checkout is completed and payment successfully received by Noon (GMT) on Friday, 13 December, Christie’s will endeavour to deliver your purchased item(s) on or before Tuesday, December 24, 2013, but is not responsible for shipping delays resulting from extended customs clearance times, inclement weather or other factors beyond our control. Due to the increased volume of holiday deliveries, Christie’s recommends that checkout be completed as soon as possible to expedite shipment.

Although we shall use reasonable efforts to take care when handling, packing and facilitating any shipment of a purchased lot, neither Christie’s nor the seller is responsible for any acts or omissions of any third party retained for these purposes, including, without limitation, any packing, shipping or delivery of purchased lots.

Non-Payment: If the buyer fails to make payment in full, cleared funds by the payment due date, Christie’s will be entitled in our absolute discretion to exercise one or more of the following rights or remedies (in addition to asserting any other rights or remedies available to us by law):

(i.) to charge interest at such rate as Christie’s shall reasonably decide;
(ii.) to hold the defaulting buyer liable for the total amount due and to commence legal proceedings for its recovery together with interest, legal fees and costs to the fullest extent permitted under applicable law;
(iii.) to cancel the sale;
(iv.) to resell the property publicly or privately on such terms as Christie’s and the seller shall think fit, and the buyer shall be liable for payment of any deficiency between the total amount originally due to us and the price obtained upon resale as well as for all costs, expenses, damages, legal fees and commissions and premiums of whatever kind associated with both sales or otherwise arising from the default;
(v.) to set off against any amounts which Christie’s, or Christie’s International plc, or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries or parent companies worldwide, may owe to the buyer in any other transactions, the outstanding amount remaining unpaid by the buyer; and/or
(vi.) to reject at any future auction any bids made by or on behalf of the buyer or to obtain a deposit from the buyer before accepting any bids.
(vii.) to exercise all the rights and remedies of a person holding security over any property in Christie’s possession owned by the buyer, whether by way of pledge, security interest or in any other way, to the fullest extent permitted by the law of the place where such property is located. The buyer will be deemed to have granted such security to Christie’s and Christie’s may retain such property as collateral security for such buyer's obligations to Christie’s; and/or
(viii.) to take such other action as Christie’s deems necessary or appropriate.
