Lot Essay

This large, colorful abstract picture is a stunning example of Peter Young’s painterly practice from the mid-1970’s. Employing the technique of wet canvas folds, Young achieves a Rorschach-like effect while retaining an elegant line that harkens back to the drip works of Jackson Pollock. Most likely exhibited at the 1974 Noah Goldowsky exhibition “Mandala Fold”, #15 is seminal in its use of folded image and precedes the folded Rorschach pictures of Andy Warhol by nearly 10 years.
