Lot Essay

This large, colorful abstract picture is a stunning example of Peter Young’s painterly practice from the mid-1970’s. Employing the technique of wet canvas folds, Young achieves a Rorschach-like effect while retaining an elegant line that harkens back to the drip works of Jackson Pollock. Most likely exhibited at the 1974 Noah Goldowsky exhibition “Mandala Fold”, is seminal in its use of folded image and precedes the folded Rorschach pictures of Andy Warhol by nearly 10 years.
