Specialist Notes:

Emerging from a monochromatic palette of dark browns and inky blacks, Florian Süßmayr’s captivating figure oscillates between intimacy and estrangement. With softly flowing locks, the figure appears to have inadvertently caught our eye. In Damen und Herren the delicacy of the image plays with the viewer’s senses, enabling the medium of paint to take on the trappings of photography. Indeed Süßmayr works at the crossroads of two media, mediating photography into the traditional art technique of oil on canvas. While photographic material represents his principal source, the simplicity of the composition and the immediacy of the work is juxtaposed with the artist’s technique, which allude to the paradox of trying to capture what seems to be a fleeting moment with a long duration technique like painting.
