Specialist Notes:German artist Thomas Scheibitz draws his formal inspiration from architecture. ‘[…] the development of an architectural idea is influential, but I don’t know whether the experience would be the same if I were to see the things actually built. For me, however, the stimulating aspect is the conception, the sketch, the mental exercise, so to speak, involved in developing the idea. My works are concepts and ideas, very few of which have actually been realised’ (T. Scheibitz, quoted in
Thomas Scheibitz: About 90 Elements/Tod im Dschungel, exh. cat.,
Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, 2007).
Juxtaposing painterly sculptural forms against expansive backdrops, in
Goldbeck, Scheibitz creates a dialogue between the painting and sculpture that is reflexive. Scheibitz works in what he calls a ‘studio-system’—he has divided his studio relatively equally between sculpture and painting, each informing the other. This multidisciplinary approach and Scheibitz’s serious interest in design theory and geometry, have deeply influenced his artistic practice. Painted with controlled precision,
Goldbeck’s minimalist composition is divided in sleek, vibrant surfaces that layer colour and form. Scheibitz’s painterly application and precise delineation of geometrical forms creates an enigmatic and complex abstract-landscape that, combined with the monumental scale of the work, encourages the viewer to become enveloped by the scene and lost in its immersive qualities.
