Specialist Notes:

New York Pictures, 1976-2002, 2002 is a collection of ten iconic images by Laurie Simmons created for the New Museum, New York. The set contains works from her series including the Walking and Lying Objects, Modern Office, and her early black and white photographs.

A contemporary of Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince, Simmons first photographs were portraits of friends. She turned her attention to dolls in the 1970s after working as a freelance photographer for a miniature dollhouse company. Composing her shots with dramatic light and from closely cropped angles, Simmons photographs resemble scenes that could be mistaken as taken from real life.
