Specialist Notes:

The Problem in Seven Parts, Part 5 is part of Lucy Skaer’s series of The Problem in Seven Parts, which is comprised of nine works exploring how we perceive imagery. Conceived to be considered on an individual basis, Skaer’s captivating works in ink take as their basis a photojournalist image of a corpse re-imaged through a variety of stylistic techniques that succeed in abstracting the image from its original source meaning. In the present work, the image expands across the brow of a Nigerian sculpted bust, exploding into a fragment of geometric abstraction. Exhibited in 2004 at Counter Gallery in London, Skaer mounted several of the drawings on a hinged, room-dividing screen, placing her work in the context of the mobile and the everyday.
