Specialist Notes:

First exhibited in 2004, Phillip Allen's Slinky Salvo (Digitally Enhanced Version forms part of a series of colourful landscape-like abstractions of which one is part of the permanent collection of Tate, London. In his compositions, painterly areas of flat colour incorporate occasional shadows, adding an element of depth to his composition. Utilizing a multitude of painterly techniques, Allen applies thin layers of colour to the panels, scratching or rubbing them away in order to achieve delicately built up passages of form that act as a stark contrast to the large swirling globules of straight oil paint adorning the horizontal edges of his work. Extending beyond the confines of the panels, the paint acts simultaneously to bring the scene into our reality while also reminding us of the very materiality of the object itself.
