Lot Essay

Untitled (1977) is a superb example from one of the greatest series of Sam Francis' oeuvre, the Matrix paintings. His production during the 1970s and early 1980s was full of intensity and rediscovery. Francis found a way to re-establish stability within his art through the use of a formal grid. Untitled establishes kinetic harmony with a grid-based composition of crossing tracks of black ink and acrylic paint, seeking to ‘catch little essences of infinity that go floating by’ (S. Francis quoted in D. Burchett-Lere, Sam Francis: Catalogue Raisonné of Canvas and Panel Paintings 1946-1994, Sam Francis Foundation 2011, p. 241). Francis created Untitled using industrial paint rollers and sponges, in addition to regular brushes, to evoke natural and architectural beamlike forms within a loose lattice construction.
