Specialist Notes:

David Korty’s work is evocative of the faded glamour of the city of Los Angeles, blanched by the harsh illumination of artificial light. Depicting everyday scenes and hazy atmospheres in phosphorescent watercolours, the artist infuses his work with the bustling life of a city constantly on the move. In Untitled the viewer recognizes the image of a moving escalator, streaming upwards and downwards through the multiple stories of an anonymous shopping mall. Reminiscent of the tradition of the everyday commute, Korty alludes to the anonymity of life in the city through a queue a faceless people standing one in front of the other in an organized and almost rhythmic way. In the muted colours of his planar and linear compositions, Korty challenges the viewer’s perception, inviting us to look closely at scenes which push the boundaries between figuration and abstraction, dissolving diffused gestures into an interplay of geometric shapes and multicoloured flashes.
