Specialist Notes:

Executed in the last decade of his life, untitled is one of a distinct group of sketches Dan Flavin created outlining his concepts for a large and ambitious gallery installation. The drawing presents the design installation for both blue and red lamps to project from a wall faced with white lamps. Flavin dedicated the series to the citizens of the Republic of France on the 200th anniversary of the revolution and it is likely that the series was planned for an exhibition in Paris. The fabricated works, however, were shown at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in 1989 along with a selection of the artist's drawings, including the present work.
