Lot Essay

Wade Guyton produces post-conceptual ‘painting’ using digital manipulation. Typically used for large-format prints, Guyton employs an Epson Stylus Pro 9600 inkjet printer to apply his medium to canvas. He repeats the motifs X, Y and U almost mechanically across his oeuvre. Parallels can be drawn between these motifs and mathematical function graphs, in which a multitude of numerical possibilities arise from the manipulation of a few basic formulae. His use of the ‘X’ in X POSTER can be related to software technology, yet the ink smudge at centre - or the slight fade of black pigment on the right extension – reveals the trace of the artist’s hand. X POSTER uses the medium of laser technology to criticize the desire to reach printed perfection. Its simplicity in form draws the viewer’s attention to the medium itself, laying bare tensions between the mechanical and the handmade.
