Lot Essay
The ear-cleaning groups are of particular interest as W.R.Sargeant in The Copeland Collection - Chinese and Japanese Ceramic Figures, Salem, 1991 believes they belong to related groups of famille rose figures that depict everyday activities including pedicure, teeth-cleaning, wine drinking, smoking and music lessons and that were believed to have erotic associations.

We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.
The ear-cleaning groups: one group has a restoration to the boot and leg of the gentleman, some fingertips are chipped and there are some glaze frits; the other group has some fingers chipped and two shallow bruises to the foot have been restuck, and one on the gentleman's sleeve.
The Hehe erxian group: With restoration to the figure wearing open robes (the chest and hands); some further overpainting to the hem of both robes; a few firing cracks to the base, some extending upwards to the sides of the group; minor chips to the extremities and glaze frits.
The figure of Shoulao: areas of overpainting and restoration, including the beard, both hands, his hat, and the tip of the peach; some minor glaze frits.
The mother and child group: with restoration to the baby; the neck of the lady has been off and restuck, with associated overpainting; losses to the extremities, including to one hand; the standing boy has been restuck to the base with traces of glue visible.
The pair of figures of Guanyin: both have restored hands with chips to the fingers, both have some small nicks to the lotus petals; one with restoration to the vase.
