EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ("A. E.") to M[argarete]. Lebach, [Caputh] "Samstag," [but postmarked Friday, 11 October 1929].

In German. One page, 146 x 104mm on a postcard addressed in his hand (moderately toned).

Arranging a visit on the Templiner See with his lover Grete Lebach. Einstein invites Lebach to visit him at his lakeside home at Caputh, suggesting she meet him at the Templin pier on Monday, noting that it would be easy for him to come there even if the weather was not suitable for sailing. Einstein also suggests that they discuss what limited options he would have to assist "L.S.", admitting that his influence was not great in "such cases." Lebach would emigrate to the United States sometime after Einstein's settlement there in 1933. Lotte Jacobi photographed the pair sailing together in Huntington, Long island during the summer of 1937. The owner of a department store in Vienna, Lebach would die of cancer in August 1938, having seen her possessions and businesses confiscated in the wake of the Nazi Anschluss.
