NEWTON, Sir Isaac (1642-1727). La methode des fluxions, et des suites infinies. Translated by Buffon. Paris: De Bure l’aîné, 1740.

First French edition of Newton’s Fluxions, translated from the English text of 1736. Newton had prepared this treatise on Calculus for the use of students shortly before his death, and entrusted it to Henry Pemberton. It later passed to John Colson, who translated it into English for the 1736 publication. Buffon’s anonymous 28-page preface discusses the Newton-Leibniz controversy. Babson 173; Wallis 236.

Quarto (252 x 189mm). Title printed in red and black, woodcut diagrams in text (occasional light toning, some light dustsoiling). Contemporary French mottled calf, edges red (worn at extremities, upper joint cracked but sturdy).
