GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885). Autograph letter signed ("U.S. Grant") to George W. Gile, Galena, Ill., 21 June 1880.

Two pages, bifolium, 199 x 124mm (light dustsoiling, mounting remnants on verso).

Grant politely declines an invitation to attend the building of an encampment and reception by New Jersey veterans, in light of his "somewhat extended visit through New Mexico and Colorado…" Grant's correspondent, George W. Gile (1830-1896) served in the 22nd Pennsylvania during the Civil War and was wounded at Antietam. He later served as Assistant Commissioner of the Freedman's Bureau for Florida in the late 1860s.

Letter signed as interim Secretary of War to Ulysses S. Grant, Charleston, 25 November 1867. Recommending First Lieutenant George W. Gile to be honored with three additional brevets. – DRIGGS, John. Autograph letters signed to "M. E. Gr High Priest I Fr Holy R. A. Chapter of State of Pennsylvania, Jacksonville, Fla., 18 September 1873. Certifying that Gile was member of the Jacksonville chapter of the lodge (marginal losses). [Also With:] related ephemera related to Gile including a draft of S. 844.
