LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865). Autograph endorsement signed ("A. Lincoln") to Henry Halleck, [Washington,] 28 October 1862.

One page, 108 x 100mm (excised from an envelope).

Seeking a replacement for a brigadier general killed at Second Bull Run (Second Manassas). Lincoln requests that Halleck for "an examination of the record of Col. Alfred J. A. Torbert, to be a Brigadier General, to command the Brigade left with out a commander by the death of Gen. Geo. W. Taylor…" It was likley Torbert's status as "the senior Colonel," and Lincoln's personal appeal, that paved the way for his promotion to Brigadier General a month later. Torbert (1833-1880) led the New Jersey Brigade at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. In 1864, he served under Sheridan in the Valley campaign.
