JOHNSON, Andrew (1808-1875). Partly printed document signed ("Andrew Johnson") as President, Washington, 16 February 1866.

One page, 344 x 435mm, with intact wax and paper seal (weak folds repaired on verso, light toning and dustsoiling in a few spots).

A scarce hand-signed appointment by Andrew Johnson appointing John Hutching of the Dakota Territory the United States Consul at Leghorn, Italy. Scarce. Unlike most presidents of the period, including Lincoln, Johnson chose to use a stamp to sign most appointment documents, especially military commissions.
