Lot Essay

The acquisition of his own press in 1894 enabled Pissarro to explore the creative potential of colour etchings. In the present subject, Pissarro used three colour plates (blue, red and yellow) printed over a key plate of black. Variations of colour and inking in all of the few life-time impressions that exist make each impression unique. All can be regarded as typically 'impressionist' in their successful capturing of the effects of light, colour and atmosphere within a landscape setting.
