This large and uncommon print is part of a series that Hockney created in 1998 at his studio in Los Angeles with Maurice Payne, the master printer at Petersburg Press, with whom Hockney had established an enduring working relationship and friendship in the 1960s. The present impression is a B.A.T. (the abbreviation for bon à tirer, French for 'ready to print'), a unique, final working proof which served as the standard for the edition. The B.A.T. is traditionally kept by the printer and the present one was gifted by the printer to the present owner in 2014.
