Each plate in this series is printed from the same block. According to Jo Miller, author of the first catalogue raisonné of the artist's prints, Albers covered the grainy wood block with paper cut-outs in the printing to create the unprinted shapes in the final three prints. The title W + P refers to the materials used: wood and paper.
