Lot Essay

Between November 1950 and November 1953 Picasso took this zinc plate through four radically different states, none of which were published and only five to six proofs of each iteration were printed for the artist and printer. The present impression of the final, fourth state (4b), printed in black and brown appears to be a working proof aside from the finished impressions.
