Lot Essay

This is the first print produced and published by the Litho Shop, a workshop for experimental printmaking established in 1970 by the artist himself. Francis had bought a lithograph press from June Wayne, founder of Tamarind Lithography Workshop (with whom he had previously collaborated).
He was one of the first artists to have his own workshop, where he employed three master printmakers full time. The Litho Shop was a creative hub, where American and international artists, gallerists, scholars and curators met and shared their perspectives about art and printmaking.
