Lot Essay

The present soup plate is part of a large service ordered by King Louis-Philippe (1773-1850) for his Fontainebleau residence in 1836 and first delivered in 1839. It was to have "a bas-relief in the Renaissance style" that would complement the château's origins. Subsequent orders for additional pieces were made through 1847. For a further discussion and another soup plate from this service, also dated 1847, see the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession no. 37.175.1.
