GILPIN, William (1724-1804). Three Essays on Picturesque Beauty; on Picturesque Travel; and on Sketching Landscape. London: R. Blamire, 1792. [BOUND WITH:] An Essay on Prints. London. 1792.

First edition of Gilpin’s historical work, including six aquatint engravings. Rejecting earlier artistic choices that favored symmetry, Gilpin was the pioneer of the “picturesque.” During his travels he would draw landscapes, emphasizing their natural beauty and putting emphasis on specific features through his use of perspective. The second work is the fourth edition.

Octavo (218 x 135mm). Half titles. Seven plates, six of which are aquatint engravings. Contemporary red morocco gilt (light rubbing and wear).
