Lot Essay

Elephants blends paisley into a whimsical circus scene. “Each elephant’s head and trunk form a meta-paisley; smaller paisleys are scattered throughout. The abundance of detail creates a pattern that rewards careful looking.” (Brown and Rennolds-Milbank, p. 139). Zuzek held a deep understanding of pattern design and would often take a well known historical pattern such as paisley and recreate it with unexpected elements like vegetables or sea creatures.
