Lot Essay

Zuzek's vegetable designs were some of her personal favorites. Having grown up on a dairy farm in upstate New York, agricultural motifs must have had a nostalgic appeal for the artist. This watercolor shows red and white beets both whole and sliced, with ruffled leaves and swirling roots. The pattern was shown on a pair of men's swim trunks in Lilly Pulitzer's 1974-75 Resort-Spring catalogue.
