“The V01D is an algorithmic piece of software that can generate an infinite number of visual outcomes... I'm watching the software dream a digital painting in direct response to the inputs I've provided about how to be creative.” —Joshua Davis
The V01D is a custom, written-from-scratch code base consisting of 9825 lines of code that Joshua Davis has been working on for the past six years. This custom piece of software uses Java + Processing + GLSL shaders to create a real-time generative body of animations, capable of creating more than 6,200 completely unique visual compositions. Because the V01D is an algorithmic generative piece of software, it is not limited to a fixed timeline of animation; it can create an infinite length of animation and generate rendered stills infinitely, like the pattern of a snowflake where no two visual compositions would ever be the same. When a video is rendered, the viewer is experiencing a window of time from the software's infinite system. In addition to the aforementioned, because the software uses audio as input, naturalistic equations are constantly updating and mutating variables and functions in real time. Davis also takes on the role of the critic, living with the work, watching it mutate and evolve, to finally capture and render a moment in time considered visually pleasing by the artist. Simply, Davis programs the rules, boundaries and decision-making power an artist would typically hold, but allows the algorithmic software to become the independent maker; as such, Davis remains in a constant state of surprise in his role as observer as the program paints and animates decisions.
Joshua Davis (b. 1971) is a Californian technologist and artist who specializes in algorithmic image making. Inspired by the intricate legacy of Jackson Pollock, Davis develops code to generate randomized but complicated visual compositions. His digital designs boast whimsical and psychedelic qualities that challenge the bounds of the human senses. Davis is the creator of praystation.com, winner of the Prix Ars Electronica 2001 Golden Nica for “Net Vision / Net Excellence.” Additionally, Davis formulated the aesthetic design of visualization of IBM’s Watson. His work has been exhibited in the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, National Design Triennial 2006 “Design Life Now”, and he presented at TED in 2005.
