拍品專文

This portrait follows the full-length portrait of Philip IV of Spain by Juan Pantoja de la Cruz (1553-1608) now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P002562). The prime version shows the king next to a tent with a helmet resting on a draped table and a landscape beyond. Here the copyist has shortened the composition and omitted the background elements. Whilst attempting to replicate Pantoja de la Cruz's attention to detail on the sitter's extravagant costume, the unknown artist here has omitted certain motifs such as the representation of the Virgin and Child with surrounding angels on the center of the breast plate.
