The canvas has a wax lining and is stable on its keyed stretcher. A seam is visible along the lower edge of the canvas, along which there are pinpoint losses and some associated restorations. The surface is abraded. There is a restored horizontal tear in the lower left of the sitter's armor, measuring 2 inches in length. To the left of this repair, further slightly discolored retouches are visible in the gold area of the armor. A few further small restorations to the armor along the belt and just below the ruff are visible in natural light. There is a broad area of restoration to the sitter's forehead and to the proper right side of his nose and cheek. A few restored damages are visible in the background above the sitter's head. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed some further retouching along the extreme edges and scattered in the background. The painting can be displayed as is.
