The inscription on this picture, which translates to, 'Orazio, son of Count Ferdinand, born in 1583, Knight of St. James, Marquis of the Holy Roman Empire, ambassador to the King of Spain on behalf of the Most Serene Cesare d'Este, died in 1627', identifies the sitter as Orazio II Sessi, 11th Count of Rolo, the son of Ferdinando I Sessi (see lot 10) and Vittoria Simonetta. He was inducted into the Order of Saint James in 1617 and became a Marquis of the Holy Roman Empire in 1622. Five years later, Orazio was appointed ambassador to Spain for Cesare d'Este, Duke of Modena. He had three children with his wife, Lucrezia Bernieri: Ferdinando, Elena, and Carlo, a portrait of whom is also offered here (see lot 12).
