This large canvas has a glue lining and is secure on a keyed stretched. The painted surface is largely flat and appears stable. There are areas of unrestored loss along the extreme edges, especially along the left edge. There are further scattered losses, many of which are filled, across the surface, including two area's in the sitter's face: a 2 inch loss running vertically to the left of the sitter's nose, and the other over the sitter's chin and goatee, measuring 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches. Other areas of loss are visible in the black garment to the right of the sitter's proper right arm (measuring approximately 8 1/2 x 6 inches), in sitter's proper left hand and in the note. An old canvas tear, shaped like the letter 'J', is visible in his left pantaloon, measuring 6 1/2 inches in length. Scattered areas of abrasion are visible across the surface, especially in the lower half of the painting. There are further areas of restoration to the sitter's face and proper left hand. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some strengthening around the white letter. The varnish fluoresces over the inscription at lower right. The painting would benefit from restoration.
