This panel is composed of three vertically oriented boards and has a slight convex bow. The left-most board has previously split and is now supported by seven small battens. The split is visible running through the sitter's proper left shoulder and hat, as seen in the catalogue image. At the center, a panel maker's mark is visible. Beveling is present on the upper and lower edges of the panel's reverse. The paint surface is stable, with a clear varnish. Old restorations along the panel split and along a smaller crack at lower right, measuring 3 1/2 inches in length, are visible in natural light. Slightly discolored restorations to surface scratches in the sitter's armor, collar, and hair are also visible in natural light. A broad area of restoration over the sitter's proper left cheek and chin is apparent. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some strengthening to the sitter's hair and in his collar. The painting presents may be hung in its present state.
