This small painting is executed on a copper panel measuring approximately 1 millimeter in thickness, and remains uniformly flat. The panel may have been trimmed, as evidenced by jagged marks along the upper edge. There are unrestored losses at the lower right corner, the largest of which measures approximately 1 x 1 ¼ inches, as seen in the catalogue image. Additional pinpoint losses revealing the copper support are visible throughout the composition. There is a thin line of added paint along the upper edge and at the upper left corner, where the paint surface has been extended to reach the edge of the copper support. In natural light, some strokes of discolored restorations are visible across the painted surface, most notably in Sebastian’s torso and thighs. The largest area of restoration runs along the edge of the figure’s proper right shin, measuring just over an inch in length. Along the left edge, an area of yellowed varnish can be seen. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned areas of inpainting, and reveals an additional area of restoration at the extreme left edge in the sky just above the horizon. The painting can be hung in its present state.
