拍品专文

This composition is modelled after the figure of the Virgin from the Santissima Annunziata, a 14th-century fresco in the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, Florence. According to tradition, the Virgin's face was miraculously painted by an angel, leading the image to become a highly venerated icon. The continued devotion of the cult dedicated to the Santissima Annunziata fresco in the 16th and 17th centuries led to the production of many copies, including that by Alessandro Allori (1535-1607), commissioned in 1579 by Francesco I de' Medici as a gift for Cardinal Federico Borromeo, now in the Museo del Duomo, Milan. The present copy was painted in the 16th century and appears to have been restored and somewhat overpainted, likely in the 19th or 20th century.
