This panel made up of three vertically grained board that are approximately 1 inch thick. It is supported on there reverse by two horizontal batons. Evidence of woodworm (no longer active) is visible on the reverse. The panel joins are visible on the paint surface and the joint at left has separated slightly. Both panel joins are filled with wax. There is further wax applied along the extreme edges and over other areas of damage across the surface, most notably at upper right, lower left, and filling a small hole at upper left. The surface is dirty with age. Inspection in natural light shows restoration and toning, especially in the skin tones of the Virgin and in the gold halo. The surface is abraded, most notably in the Virgin’s mantel and in the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations and further reveals broad areas of restoration in the background. Further examination is hindered by a cloudy varnish and the wax on the surface.
