This small canvas has been laid down on board and the reverse is covered with wax. The prepared surface is visible along the extreme upper and right edges. Some areas of Mariana’s clothing and the dark background are thinly painted, allowing the ground and some penciled underdrawing to show through. Inspection under ultraviolet light does not reveal any campaigns of restoration or additional losses. The painting presents well and may be hung in its present state.
