The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has a wax lining and is secure on a keyed strainer. Losses are visible along the extreme edges, the largest of which measures 5 inches in length along the upper right edge. There are further scattered losses across the surface, including to the left of the sitter's ear, measuring 1 1/4 inches in length, and smaller losses in the sitter's face and clothing. In natural light, strengthening is visible near the sitter's mouth. There is an area of damage, measuring 1.3 x 3.8 centimeters, in the sitter's proper right shoulder. The surface is abraded, especially over the sitter's red sash, collar and ear. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some strengthening in the sitter's cheeks, forehead, to the right of his lips, and outlining his collar at left. The painting can be hung in its present state.
