Lot Essay

This painting is a later copy after a portrait by Diego Velázquez (1599-1660), now in the Wellington Collection at Apsley House, London. The identity of the sitter remains unknown, though in 1978 Enriqueta Harris proposed that he may be José Nieto, Chamberlain to Queen Mariana of Austria, whose out-of-focus figure appears in the background of Las Meninas (see E. Harris, 'Velazquez's Apsley House Portrait: An Identification', Burlington Magazine, CXX, no. 902, May 1978, pp. 304-308).
