The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has a glue lining and is secure on a keyed strainer. There is an uneven varnish across the surface. There are minor losses along the extreme edges. Further small losses are scattered in the background. Inspection in natural light shows two areas of restoration in the dark background at upper right, the first measuring 3 1/2 by 3/4 inches and the second measuring 3 1/2 by 3 inches. Another area of restoration is visible in the red curtain at upper center, measuring 2 1/2 by 1 inches. Inspection under ultraviolet light further reveals strengthening scattered in the background and sitter’s skirt. The uneven varnish also fluoresces in some areas. The painting can be hung in its present state.
