Lot Essay

This painting is a modern copy after Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo's (c. 1611-1667) Portrait of the Infanta Margarita, now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P001192). The prime original was formerly attributed to Diego Velázquez (1599-1660), whom del Mazo closely followed, later becoming his son-in-law. Likely commissioned just after Velázquez's death, the Prado portrait is dated circa 1665.
