The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This large canvas has a wax lining and is secure on a keyed stretcher. There are filled losses along the extreme edges of the painting, as seen in the catalogue image. Further filled losses are visible in the background, including one measuring 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 inches at upper left, and another measuring 5 inches in length at upper center. There is an unrestored loss filled with wax at upper right measuring 2 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches. Scattered small losses are visible throughout, especially over the figures. There is a restored tear with some associated losses in Christ's proper right arm and ribcage, measuring 8 inches in length. A large, restored curvilinear tear, also with associated losses, begins in the grey cloak at left and travels along the outline of the leaning figure at right and down into Christ's proper left leg. The surface is abraded over the faces of the figures, especially that of the Virgin. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations along the restored tears over the figures. Strengthening is visible in the background as well as in some areas of the figures, including the central figures' hair and Christ's foot and beard. The painting could benefit from additional restoration, but can be hung in its present state.
