拍品專文

This painting follows the composition of a painting by Luis de Morales in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P007864). The Hispanic Society of America retains an autograph version of this composition with some variation in the position and in the features of the Christ Child's face (inv. no. A80).

The model for Morales's composition is Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna of the Yarnwinder, of which several Spanish copies are known. It is possible that Morales saw one of these, such as those by Fernando Yañez de la Almedina (c.1475-1536) or Fernando Llanos (c.1470-c.1525), both of whom spent short periods of time in Leonardo's workshop. An example by Llanos is now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no. P003081)
