The panel has been cradled on the reverse. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the high-gloss varnish has yellowed somewhat with age. Restorations and some pinpoint losses along a panel join are visible, especially in the left shoulder and right thigh of Christ and in the lap of the Virgin below him. There is an uneven craquelure on the surface. Some restorations to the Virgin's face have discolored with age. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a square area of restoration in the background at upper left. Further inspection with an ultraviolet lamp is hindered by an opaque varnish. The painting can be displayed in its present state.
